WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team responded from a halftime deficit to earn its first Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Women's Championship by defeating Saint Vincent, 13-11, at Alexandre Stadium.
Both teams traded scores for the first 12 minutes as the match was knotted at 3-3 on an SVC goal with 18:18 left in the first half.
Monica Ewansik opened the scoring just 13 seconds into play off a pass from
Caroline Kallos, who won the draw control and raced down the field before finding Ewansik for the goal.
Diana Harvey put W&J back up by a 2-1 count at 27:36 and Ewansik posted her second at 19:12, 3-2.
W&J was the first team to score consecutive goals, as
Ashley Bulger and Ewansik scored just under three minutes apart to open up a 5-3 lead with 14:31 remaining in the period. The Bearcats, however, tallied the next five goals to take an 8-5 lead. The run stopped when Kallos found the back of the net at 3:47, which sent the two teams to halftime with the Bearcats leading, 8-6.
Again, the Presidents struck quickly to open the half, this time needing just 20 seconds to make it an 8-7 game when Kallos scored off a pass from
Alex Dikos. The assist was the 100th career point for Dikos. SVC answered at 28:03 to make it a 9-7 lead, but W&J registered four goals in a 4:02 span to roar back and take an 11-9 lead. Kallos scored the first goal of the spurt, while Bulger registered her 60th and 61st goals and
Lauren Brown notched her 11th. The Bearcats cut the lead to one, 11-10, at 13:02, but Kallos scored twice to push the margin to three, 13-10, with 7:34 left. The final goal of the match came from the Bearcats with under two minutes to play, but W&J held on for the victory.
Saint Vincent led on shots, 35-30, and shots on goal, 23-22, and also secured more ground balls, 37-32. W&J held the edge on draw controls, corralling 17 of the 26.
Kallos led all players with seven points, tallying a match-high five goals and adding two assists. Bulger and Ewansik both added hat tricks, while Harvey contributed two points. For Bulger, she finishes her senior season with 61 goals, second on the W&J single-season list.
Desiree Goldstrohm led the Presidents with four ground balls, and Ewansik and Kallos both scooped up five draw controls and Harvey added four.
Michaela Mulokey extended her record to 12-1 on the year, making 12 saves, the third highest total of her career.
The Presidents finish the 2016 season with a 13-4 overall record, matching the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons for the best record in program history. W&J concluded the season on a 12-match winning streak, including an 8-0 mark in the ORLC.
Following the tournament, Bulger, Kallos, Harvey and Mulokey were named to the ORLC All-Tournament Team. Kallos earned 'Player of the Game' honors from the PAC Sports Network, who provided the broadcast for the event.
