WASHINGTON, Pa. -- In the first start of his career,
Garrett Harstine pitched seven shutout innings and
Jake Gordon drove in four as the Presidents took down Pitt-Greensburg, 7-0, in nonconference action.
The win improves Washington & Jefferson to 8-7 overall this season, including a 5-2 mark at Ross Memorial Park. The Bobcats, currently second in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, drop to 11-10 on the year.
W&J got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, as singles by
Adam LaRue,
Derek Helbing and
Frank Fortunato loaded the bases for
Josh Crummer, who delivered a two-run single through the left side, 2-0.
It would be all the runs Harstine (2-0), who combined with
Nick Kolat for the shutout, would need. The rookie righty needed just 74 pitches to get through 7.0 innings, as he scattered six hits and struck out two, while walking one. He also got nine outs on the ground and eight via flyball. Kolat worked the final 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two in facing the minimum six batters.
The Presidents tacked on a three spot in the bottom of the third, thanks to a three-run homer by
Jake Gordon, his first of the season. He drilled the first pitch he saw over the left-center fence, bringing in Fortunato, who doubled to lead off, and Sciullo, who reached on an infield single, 5-0.
Each of the sixth and seventh innings brought an insurance run for the Presidents, as Helbing walked and came around to score thanks to a pair of errors and a wild pitch in the sixth, and Crummer and Gordon notched doubles in the seventh, 7-0.
Gordon finished 2-for-4 with a pair of extra-base hits and a career-best four RBI. LaRue posted a career-high three hits, and Fortunato and Crummer each both collected a pair of hits. Helbing was on base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
W&J returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 6, with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Westminster.
