WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team improved to 8-0 on Wednesday night, Sept. 28, with a 4-0 win against Wooster.
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) opened the scoring in the game in the second minute after taking a penalty corner and sending a pass to the top of the box.
Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) fired a shot which was redirected into the back of the cage by Buyan.
Ten minutes later, Steffey got on the board with a close-range shot from the center of the box and sent the ball through the keeper's legs for her fifth goal of the season. Steffey gave the Presidents a 3-0 lead in the 37th minute after
Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) was able to dribble deep into Wooster territory and found Steffey for another close range shot. Steffey's five points in the game were the most by a W&J player in a game this season.
Laura O'Malley (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) rounded out the scoring for the game with a goal in the 61st minute after receiving a pass from Buyan off a penalty corner opportunity.
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) (8-0) earned the win in goal for the Presidents as she made a career-high eight saves. This was also Baran's fourth shutout of the season, third in a row, and all four shutouts have come in the last five games. Baran extended her scoreless streak to 231:37 and now holds a 0.63 goals against average on the season. Lida LeVine (4-5) took the loss for the Fighting Scots, making seven saves in 43:56. Madi Thomas came on to finish the game and made one save.
The Presidents held a 22-15 edge in total shots and a 12-11 edge in shots on goal.Â
W&J returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they host Utica in Empire 8 action at 1 p.m.
