WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents used a 19-3 run over the final 2:27 of the first half and beginning 6:05 of the second half to hold off Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference action, 69-61.
The victory keeps Washington & Jefferson in second place in the league women's basketball standings at 9-3, half a game ahead of Bethany. W&J also improves to 12-7 on the season, while Grove City falls below .500 at 9-10, 5-7 in conference action.
Facing the only double-digit margin of the game when trailing by 10, 33-23, after a Grove City jumper at 4:05 of the second quarter,
Alyssa Riley (North Ridge, Ohio/North Ridgeville) sank a pair of free throws that were answered by one from the Wolverines. A triple by
Danni Medovich (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) at 2:10 of the period would be the final points by either team in the half, but were the opening part of the 19-3 run. W&J trailed, 34-28, at halftime.
The two teams canceled out three points by the other in the first 1:17 of the third quarter, but then the Presidents then utilized a 13-0 run that featured seven points from
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), four of her game-high 22 points from
Rachel Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and a pair by
Mia Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi). Bellhy's layup at the 6:49 mark gave W&J the lead for good.
The 22 points by Bellhy were a season high and matched her career best from almost exactly one year previously, Jan. 30, 2016, when she had 22 points at Chatham. She finished 10-of-14 from the floor and added five rebounds, tied with Woytovich for the team lead. Parker added 15 points, plus three boards, two assists and two blocks and Medovich reached double digits for the sixth time this season at 14 points thanks to a pair of three-pointers. She also contributed four boards and three assists.
Taylor Cortazzo led all players with six assists, as the Presidents recorded 22 assists on 25 made baskets.
W&J next travels to New Wilmington, Pa., on Wednesday, Feb. 1 for a 6 p.m. tip-off at Westminster. The Presidents bested the Titans, 89-72, in the first match-up of the year at the Henry Memorial Center in December.
