Presidents advance to postseason with 3-1 victory over Waynesburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team wrapped up regular season play with a 3-1 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Waynesburg on Saturday, Oct. 28.

With the win, W&J moves to 11-6 overall with a 4-4 record in the PAC, while Waynesburg falls to 5-9-2 overall and 3-5 in conference.

The Presidents went up early as Jason Yobbi (South, Park, Pa./South Park) booted a free kick from midfield into the box, which found the head of Paul Mokrzan (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson) for the score in the 14th minute. After conceding a penalty kick goal in the 65th minute, W&J found the net again. A second free kick from Yobbi landed in traffic, and Matt Kotkiewicz (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) fought off a defender and scored over the outstretched keeper.

That score held until 17 seconds remained in regulation, when Jacob Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) received a pass around midfield, and dribbled up the right-hand side into the box for a shot to the keeper's left.

The Presidents outshot the Yellow Jackets, 21-12, and held a 14-4 advantage in shots on target.

Mokrzan and Kotkiewicz led the team with four shots apiece, four and three on goal, respectively, and a goal each. Christian Payne (South Park, Pa./South Park) took five shots, four going on goal. Yobbi added two shots, both on target, and tallied two assists.

Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started in goal and picked up his 11th win of the season, making two saves in the process.

The win advances the Presidents to the PAC Men's Soccer Championship for the first time since 2013, as they will travel to Thomas More on Wednesday, Nov. 1, for the semifinals at a time yet to be determined.
