BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Sophomore
Jordan West (Washington, Pa./Washington) rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns and senior
Jesse Zubik (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) broke the Presidents' Athletic Conference receiving yards record in a 31-17 Washington & Jefferson victory at Geneva.
With the victory, the Presidents, ranked 15th by D3football.com and 10th by the American Football Coaches Association, remain unbeaten at 9-0, with a 7-0 mark in the PAC. The win also marked the 137th in 15 seasons at the helm for head coach
Mike Sirianni, tying him atop the W&J career wins list with former leader John Luckhardt.
Geneva struck first after the two teams exchanged punts on their first possessions with a 32-yard field goal at 8:18 of the first quarter, 3-0. W&J then responded with a 15-play, 65-yard drive that chewed off 4:52 and was capped off by a 26-yard field goal by senior kicker
Josh Hnat (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) at 3:25 of the period.
W&J struck twice in the first half of the second quarter, both on rushes by West from five and one yard out. The second drive came after senior safety
Luke Merhaut (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) recovered a fumble at the Geneva 14 and West covered the rest in three plays, 17-3.
A short punt by the Presidents with under a minute left in the half allowed Geneva to strike for score before halftime to make it 17-10 through 30 minutes.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but with a second-down catch for 14 yards in the middle of the period, Zubik broke the PAC career receiving yardage record by reaching 4,264 yards. He finished the day with eight catches for 115 yards, his second-straight game over 100 yards, and the 21st time in his career he eclipsed that mark.
The third play of the fourth quarter saw West score for the third time of the day, this time from three yards, as W&J stretched the lead to 24-10 with 14:14 to play. W&J tacked on another score with 1:10 to go when freshman running back
EJ Thompson (La Plata, Md./Thomas Stone) scampered in from 23 yards, 31-10. Geneva answered with a 42-yard scoring strike to set the final margin at 31-17.
The 154 yards for West on the ground matched his career high from week one of the season against St. John Fisher, while the three touchdowns were also a new career benchmark, as were his 36 carries. The 36 rushes were the most in a single game by a President since Ryan Ruffing carried 38 times against Carnegie Mellon on Sept. 19, 2015.
Sophomore quarterback
Jacob Adams (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) completed 21-of-29 passes for 214 yards with no touchdowns and an interception in his second career start.
For the game, the Presidents accumulated 450 yards of total offense compared to 314 for Geneva.
Junior safety
Zach Royba (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) led the Presidents with nine tackles on the day. Senior defensive end
Tom Marra (Moon Township, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) had eight tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, plus a sack and fumble recovery and senior linebacker
Nick Murgo (Warren, R.I./Mount Hope) also added eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
