Early run allows W&J to coast past Westminster, 63-50

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team used a 14-0 run that took up half of the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 63-50 win at Westminster.

With the victory, the Presidents remain undefeated on the season at 6-0, including a 3-0 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Titans slip to 1-4 overall and 0-3 within the league.

After the home team started the scoring 40 seconds into the game with a three-pointer, W&J posted the next 14 points to open up a 14-3 lead at 4:08 of the first quarter. During the spurt, Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded five points, while Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Amirah Moore (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) each added four. W&J was 4-of-10 from the field during the run and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line, while holding Westminster to 0-for-4 and causing six Titans' turnovers. Westminster got four points back, but another six points from the Presidents, four of which came from the charity stripe and four off the hands of Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), built the lead to 20-7 with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter before W&J held a 20-8 lead through 10 minutes.

The second quarter was more balanced at 17-15 in Westminster's favor, with Mia Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) contributing seven of W&J's 15 points as the Presidents held a 10-point lead at halftime, 35-25.

Westminster got the game within double figures twice in the second half, including a 48-39 margin through three periods, but W&J scored outscored the Titans by four in the final stanza to post the 63-50 victory.

Moore (14), Parker (14) and Woytovich (13) all finished in double figures to lead W&J, with Woytovich shooting 6-of-8 from the field. Parker added her second-straight double-double by also pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Seven Presidents contributed at least one steal, led by Woytovich's five steals, which matched her career high, as W&J forced 29 Westminster turnovers.

W&J will travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Dec. 5 for a nonconference road match-up at Carnegie Mellon (5-1) in a battle of teams receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
