WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team defeated Grove City, 78-57, on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The win continues the Presidents' unbeaten season, improving their record to 8-0, the best eight-game start to a season in program history. Four of W&J's eight wins have come in PAC play, while Grove City falls to 3-5 and 1-3 in conference.
After falling behind 10-6 at 6:16 of the first quarter, W&J ended the period on a 16-7 run, led by
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) with nine points, to take a 22-15 lead into the second period. Grove City tightened the gap in the second, outscoring the Presidents 22-20, which put the score at 42-37 in favor of W&J heading into halftime.
The Presidents commanded the third period as they scored 21 points, while only allowing six to their opponent, to push their lead to 63-43, before a 15-14 fourth put the final score at 78-57.
Parker led the team with a game-high 25 points, as she shot 11-of-14 from the field, and pulled in seven rebounds, all of which came on the offensive glass. She also tallied three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin),
Mia Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) and
Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) each added nine points to go along with five assists from Gilbert and six boards courtesy of Woytovich, both of which were game highs.
Solid contributions came from the bench as
Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) and
Taley Dunaway (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) scored six points apiece and combined for five rebounds.
W&J outscored Grove City in three of the four periods and held an advantage in assists, 23-8, and steals, 16-9.
The Presidents will return to the court when they travel to Marietta on Tuesday, Dec. 19, with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
