Westminster swerves past W&J, 80-70

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson dropped an 80-70 decision on the road at Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

An early 16-4 run by Westminster saw the Titans hold a 17-9 lead at the 13:33 mark of the first half, but W&J responded with a 16-2 run over the next 6:51 to take a 25-19 lead with 6:42 to play in the frame. During the spurt, the Presidents connected on 3-of-4 three-pointers, including a pair by Mike Zappala (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and another by reigning PAC and three-time ECAC Rookie of the Week Sean Stinelli (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford). During that same span, the W&J defense held Westminster to 1-of-9 shooting, while forcing three turnovers.

The home team then turned the tables with a 16-5 drive leading up to halftime that made it 35-30 with 1:05 remaining, but a triple off the hand of Jonathan DeVito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) at 0:49 sent W&J into the intermission trailing by just two, 35-33.

A three-pointer from Stinelli at 17:27 of the second half gave W&J the lead back, 40-39, but W&J's last time with the advantage occurred off of a Brian Graytok (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) layup 50 seconds later, 42-41. Ahead by three (62-59) with 6:30 remaining, Westminster embarked on a 14-2 run over the next 4:40 to pull away late.

Graytok's 22 points were a game high and marked his fourth 20-point game of the season and first since Jan. 7 when he netted 20 points at Chatham. One of four Presidents to reach double figures, Graytok also led all players with six assists. Brian Lindquist (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds. Zappala connected on four three-pointers in the first half to contribute 12 points, with Stinelli adding 11. Both players grabbed five rebounds.

W&J will host Chatham at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Henry Memorial Center.
