WAYNESBURG, Pa. –
Brian Lindquist (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) hit a layup with four seconds remaining to give the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team a 57-56 win at Waynesburg on Wednesday night, Feb. 15, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
With the win, the Presidents snapped a nine-game losing streak to Waynesburg.
Â
Trailing by five points with 2:46 remaining in the game, the Presidents scored six points in two possessions, thanks to a three-pointer from
Jonathan DeVito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) and an old fashioned three-point play from
Sean Stinelli (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) to take a 53-52 lead with 1:55 remaining. After the teams exchanged two points each, Waynesburg's Kendall Paige sank a jumper with 11 seconds left to give the Yellow Jackets a one-point lead, setting the stage for Lindquist's game-winning bucket.
Â
After the Presidents opened the second half by scoring the first four points to take a six-point lead, the Yellow Jackets responded by going on a 17-2 run to gain a 42-33 lead, their largest of the game. The Presidents countered with a 14-2 run of their own, started by two three-pointers from
Mike Zappala (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), to regain a three-point lead before the Yellow Jackets scored eight straight points to take a 52-47 lead.
Â
Both teams went back and forth in the first half. Waynesburg gained a lead as large as three points (5-2) before a 7-0 run by the Presidents to take a 9-5 lead, their largest lead of the half. Neither team led by any more than two points for the rest of the half with a total of six ties and five lead changes as the Presidents went into halftime with a 27-25 lead.
Â
Lindquist finished the game with 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field to go along with six rebounds and a blocked shot. Stinelli totaled a team-high 14 points and tied Lindquist for the team-high in rebounds (6) while he dished out three assists and came away with two steals and a block.
Â
DeVito and
Alex Richards (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) both scored nine points as DeVito made 3-of-5 three-pointers while Richards connected on 4-of-6 shots from the field.
Â
After the Yellow Jackets shot 42.3 percent from the field in the first half, the Presidents limited them to just 33.3 percent (8-of-24) in the second half. W&J's bench outscored Waynesburg's, 12-9, while the Presidents as a team held a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Â
The Presidents will close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 18, when they host Thomas More in a 3 p.m. PAC matchup.
