Lockdown fourth quarter defense moves Presidents past Thiel, 62-53

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team allowed just one field goal and seven points in the fourth quarter en route to a 62-53 comeback victory at Thiel on Wednesday night, Feb. 8, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The win at Thiel tonight marked the sixth straight win for the Presidents (15-7, 12-3 PAC), a season high, and earned W&J the series sweep of Thiel for the fifth straight season.

Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored a game-high 21 points and pulled in a season-high nine rebounds in the winning effort, just one board shy of tying her career high. Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and the fifth of her career. Parker also contributed three blocks and a steal on the defensive end.

Rachel Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) totaled 13 points in the game for her fourth double-digit scoring effort in the last five games. She also pulled in eight rebounds, her third straight game with at least eight, and came away with a steal.

After holding the Tomcats to 40.7 percent shooting from the field in the first half, the Presidents's defense allowed the Tomcats to shoot just 16 percent (4-of-25) in the second half, including 7.1 percent in the fourth quarter (1-of-14). For the game, the Presidents forced 17 turnovers and held advantages in points off turnovers (14-4), points in the paint (30-8) second chance points (6-0) and fast break points (8-0).

The Presidents will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they travel to face Bethany in a 2 p.m. PAC contest.
