WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --
Ryan Sciullo (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) drove in three runs and had two outfield assists at home plate as Washington & Jefferson returned to its winning ways with an 11-6 win over St. Thomas (Minn.) at Chain of Lakes Park.
Sciullo's triple to left center in the bottom of the third scored a pair of runs and broke open a game that had been 1-1 at the beginning of the inning. The junior drove the first pitch he saw to the 380-foot sign in left-center where it hit off the wall allowing him to sprint around to third as
Derek Helbing (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) and
Mark Merlino (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) crossed home plate to make it 5-1. Helbing reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Luke Zahren (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) (2-1), who walked to lead off the frame and went to third when
Adam LaRue (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) singled. LaRue came in on
Nick Vento's (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) sacrifice fly (3-1), which Merlino followed up with a single through the left side before moving to second on an errant throw by the Tommies' left fielder. The inning was capped when
Dan Trettel (Wexford, Pa./West Allegheny) singled up the middle to drive in Sciullo and end the scoring with W&J leading 6-1 through three innings.
St. Thomas (4-6) responded with four runs (two earned) off starter
Bryce Schnatterly (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) in the bottom of the fourth to climb right back into the game at 6-5.
In the top of the fifth, St. Thomas led off with a triple down the right-field line, but the next batter flew out to center field and Sciullo cut down the runner at the plate and Helbing applied the tag. The next batter flew out to get out of the inning unscathed.
The top of the sixth saw the Tommies load the bases after tying the game, 6-6, against reliever
Santino Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), but, once again, Sciullo cut down the go-ahead run at the plate for an inning-ending double play. This time, he rounded off the ball in left-center and gunned home where Helbing made a quick tag from in front of the plate to end the threat.
After a pair of scoreless half innings, including one where
Will Bowser (Burgettstown, Pa./Madonna (W.Va.)) struck out two of the three batters he faced looking, the Presidents once again put up a crooked number in the bottom of the seventh with five runs. LaRue singled to begin the inning and went to second when Vento walked. Merlino's walk loaded the bases and Sciullo hit a sac fly to bring in LaRue. Trettel then ripped a line drive to left-center that scored a pair and
Nick Gatins (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton), welcoming a new Tommies pitcher, ripped an RBI single through the middle and then stole second where he scored from when
Kevin Begley (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) doubled down the left-field line to cap the scoring, 11-6.
The eighth and ninth innings were scoreless frames from
Garrett Harstine (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) and
Clay Martin (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), respectively.
Trettel finished 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored, while Sciullo (2-for-3, three RBI) and Gatins (2-for-4, two RBI) both registered two hits, multiple RBI and a run scored. Begley and LaRue both also had multi-hit games for the W&J offense, which banged out 13 hits on the afternoon and improved to 6-2 this season.
Schnatterly went the first 5.0 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs (two earned) with a pair of strike outs and no walks. He got 10 outs through the air over his 82 pitches. Platt gave up a run with two hits and two walks in 33 pitches in an inning of relief. Bowser picked up the win to improve to 1-0 this year, striking out two.
The Presidents will be off on Wednesday, March 22 before returning to action at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 23.
