CLERMONT, Fla. -- St. Lawrence hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to surpass the Washington & Jefferson softball team, 5-3, at the PFX Spring Games at the Legends Way complex.
Leading going into the final half inning by a 3-1 count, the Presidents surrendered a lead-off single before getting the next two batters out via a ground out and a fly out. The ensuing batter reached on an error and the next batter was hit by a pitch to lead the bases, setting the table for the Saints' Elle Gray to connect on the game-winning blast.
W&J was first on the scoreboard, plating a single run in the fourth inning.
Abby Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) doubled to left to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) before scoring when
Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) reached on an error with two outs.
In the sixth, the Presidents stretched the lead to 3-0. Cunningham again led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Lapia.
Jamie Smith (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before
Ally Doty (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) delivered an RBI infield single and Andres registered an RBI ground out.
SLU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to take the 3-1 deficit into the seventh inning.
Cunningham tallied three of W&J's five hits, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Andres suffered the loss in the circle to drop to 1-3 for the Florida trip. The sophomore went 6.2 innings and gave up five hits and five runs, all unearned.
The loss drops W&J to 1-6 to open the season, while SLU improves to 6-1.
The Presidents wrap up their Florida swing with games against Plymouth State (N.H.) and Elmhurst (Ill.) at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont.
