BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team put together a complete effort on both ends of the field en route to a 17-4 victory at Bethany.
With the victory, the Presidents end a five-game road swing with a 3-6 overall record and improve to 2-0 in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference. The Bison fall to 3-5 on the year with an 0-2 mark within conference action.
The hosts scored two of the first three goals on the day, with
Kyle Heinig (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) knotting the game at 2-2 before the end of the first quarter. It would be the first of five-straight goals for W&J as the Presidents built a 6-2 lead by the 8:06 mark of the second quarter on a goal by
Bryan Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney), which was assisted by
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). The Bison found the back of the net twice more before the end of the first half, but Ward turned in a pair of goals of his own to give W&J an 8-4 halftime advantage.
In the second half, W&J stepped up the aggressiveness by scoring all nine goals and outshooting the Bison, 36-6.
On the afternoon, the Presidents tallied a program-record 67 shots, while holding the Bison to just 13 shots. W&J also converted 20-of-21 clear attempts and doubled up Bethany in ground balls, 41-20.
Ward led W&J with six points on the day, highlighted by four goals for the fourth hat trick of his rookie campaign. Heinig posted five points on three goals and two assists, firing 15 shots in the process. He moved into a tie for first atop the Presidents' career shots record list at 425 and moved into a tie for second in career assists (54).
Devon Curran (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) notched four points (two goals, two assists). Whipkey and
Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) each totaled two goals and an assist, with
Kyle MacKenzie (Manchester Center, Vt./Burr and Burton Seminary) adding a goal and an assist.
Jake Bow (Newfane,N.Y./Newfane) went a perfect 9-for-9 in face-offs, while
David Whipkey (Poland, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) also won nine draws.
David Whipkey and
Joseph Tritschler (New Kensington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) both snagged a game-best five ground balls and
Michael Nejak (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) caused four turnovers.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) faced just 10 shots on goal against the Bison and turned away six of them in picking up his third victory.
W&J will host Oberlin in nonconference action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29.
