W&J unable to scratch out runs in doubleheader drought at Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Presidents had their 10-game winning streak end abruptly, scoring zero runs in dropping both ends of a twin bill at Thomas More by scores of 4-0 and 3-0.

The No. 17 Washington & Jefferson baseball team drops to 17-5 overall and 12-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and second-place Thomas More improves to 17-5 with a 7-2 mark in league play.

W&J left nine runners on base in the first game, including two in each of the first, fourth, sixth and seventh frames. The big blow in the opener was a two-out, bases-clearing double by Thomas More shortstop Jacob Whitford that broke open a 1-0 game in the fifth.

Catcher Derek Helbing (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) and designated hitter Nick Gatins (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) both recorded a pair of hits in the opener, with Helbing also walking, and accounting for W&J's lone stolen base and extra-base hit. Riley Groves (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) was saddled with the loss to fall to 4-2 on the year. The senior went 6.0 innings and gave up six hits and four earned runs with seven strike outs and three walks.

In the night cap, the Saints scratched across single runs in the fourth through sixth innings to secure the victory and guarantee a series win. Frank Fortunato (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) had the lone multi-hit performance for the Presidents in game two. Trevor Kerr (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville) drops to 3-2 on the year after working the first 5.0 innings of three-hit baseball while walking two and allowing two earned runs. Will Bowser (Burgettstown, Pa./Madonna (W.Va.)) gave up a run on two hits in one inning of relief.

The two teams wrap up the series with a nine-inning game tomorrow, Saturday, April 15, with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
