GREENVILLE, Pa. -- No. 17 Washington & Jefferson rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to tie the Presidents' Athletic Conference single-season record for wins following a 7-5 victory at Thiel.
The Presidents improve to 21-3 in league play for the third time, matching the mark set by the 2012 W&J team and equaled by the 2014 squad. W&J will take a 30-9 overall record into this coming week's PAC Tournament which will be hosted at Ross Memorial Park Thursday-Saturday, May 11-13. The top-seeded Presidents will open up play at 12 p.m. on Thursday against the fourth seed to be determined on Monday afternoon as Grove City and Waynesburg close out the regular season at Grove City. If Waynesburg wins, Thiel will be the third seed and Waynesburg will be the fourth. If Grove City wins, the Wolverines will be the third seed and the Presidents will play the Tomcats for the fourth time in six days.
The Presidents took the lead for the first time Sunday in the seventh inning. An RBI triple to right-center by
Ryan Sciullo (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) scored
Frank Fortunato (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who walked and stole second to lead off, 5-5. The triple was Sciullo's sixth of the season -- and 14th of his career -- moving him into a tie for third place on the single-season list. Sciullo then scored on an RBI single by
Kevin Begley (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) to give the Presidents a 6-5 lead.
W&J added an insurance run in the eighth inning to push the lead to 7-5. With one out,
Nick Gatins (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) doubled and scored two batters later on an RBI single by
Nick Vento (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional).
Derek Helbing (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win and earn his fourth save of the season and the 10th of his career.
Matt Heslin (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) earned the win (4-0) in relief, tossing 5.0 innings of two-hit ball and getting eight ground outs and walking just one batter. It extended his personal scoreless streak to 15.1 innings over his last five appearances.
The Presidents scored their first four runs of the day with single runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings. Sciullo scored on a wild pitch in the second to kick off the scoring and make it 4-1. Fortunato drove in Helbing with an RBI single in the second as W&J climbed to 4-2. Gatins doubled home
Dante Dalesandro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) in the third and it was 5-3. Begley led off the sixth by being hit by a pitch and stole second before advancing to third on a single by
Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and later scoring.
