How it Happened:Â The Washington & Jefferson cross country team hosted the W&J Invitational on Friday, Sept. 29, at Mingo Creek Park in Finleyville, Pa., and posted strong performances as the men's team finished third out of six teams while the women also placed third in the nine team field.
Top Finishers:Â
Shane Burkhart (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) paced the men's team as he finished as the victor in the men's field (52 runners) with a time of 28:04.60, just over 24 seconds better than the second-place finisher.
Maggie Briceland (Salem, Ohio/United Local) was the top W&J finisher on the women's side as she placed sixth in the 71-runner field with a time of 20:08.21.
The Rest:Â Colin Meehan (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) placed sixth on the men's side with a time of 28:59.11 while
Anthony Voto (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) came in 12th (30:07.15).
Billy Lott (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) and
Brandon Marcucci (Presto, Pa./Chartiers Valley) rounded out the Presidents' finishers in the race as Lott finished 18th in a time of 31:05.75 and Marcucci placed 37th with a time of 34:49.97. The five W&J runners combined to score 66 points.

For the women,
Payton McAninch (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) also finished in the top 10, posting a ninth-place finish in a time of 20:26.71.
Hannah Robart (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) and
Hannah Lacey (Brownsville, Pa./Bethlehem Center) finished back-to-back in the 12th and 13th spots, respectively, as Robart recorded a time of 20:48.46 to beat out Lacey who finished in 20:57.18.
Marygrace Depp (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) finished in 24th place in a time of 21:52.55, ahead of
Kate Sullivan (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) who completed the race in 22:33.68, good for 31st place.
Olivia Trauner (Centerville, Pa./Union City) and
Anna Zrile (Mercer, Pa./West Middlesex) wrapped up the race for W&J with respective 39th (23:25.63) and 45th (24:38.66) place finishes. The seven women's team runners totaled 62 points for W&J.
What's Next:Â The Presidents will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 14, when they travel to Oberlin, Ohio, to take part in the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble beginning at 10:00 a.m.
