Seniors lead W&J to three wins over Hiram and Franciscan

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson swimming & diving teams picked up three wins on Saturday, Jan. 20, on Senior Day as the women earned 62-41 and 62-35 decisions over Franciscan and Hiram, respectively, while the men were 96-65 winners over Hiram.
 
Alexis Glenn (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) led the way for the women's squad with three victories, including two in individual races. She won the 50 (26.68) and the 100 freestyle (59.30) events while swimming the opening leg of the 200 medley relay (1:58.70) followed by Jillian McElhaney (Butler, Pa./Butler Area), Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Kiera MacWhinnie (South Portland, Maine/Waynflete School). McElhaney won the 100 backstroke (1:07.83), Magyari finished first in both the 200 freestyle (2:08.41) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.71) and MacWhinnie posted a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:08.81).
 
Owen Hanna (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) helped the men's side with four total wins, two individual and two relays. His individual victories came in the 100 (50.52) and 200 freestyles (1:55.38) while he swam anchor in both the opening 200 medley relay (1:44.67) and the closing 200 free relay (1:38.35). Hanna was preceded by Zach Lauer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), Jeremy Glasner (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) and Matt Noel (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) in the 200 medley relay and swam after Theo Skoric (Vanderbilt, Pa./Laurel Highlands), Jared Rebman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and Noel in the 200 free relay.
 
Lauer and Noel each tallied one individual win on the day with Lauer winning the 100 backstroke (55.42) and Noel in the 50 freestyle (24.06). Glasner tied Hanna for the team lead in individual wins, winning both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.22) and the 1000 freestyle (11:04.33). Rebman and Skoric had runner-up finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.03) and the 50 freestyle (24.61), respectively. Skoric also won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 199.00 while also posted a score of 205.55 on the three-meter board.
 
Alexandria Daum (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Delaney Burke (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) rounded out the individual winners for the women's team as Daum won the 1000 freestyle (12:36.59) with Burke touching the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.50). Kaitlyn Ewing (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 (1:05.91) and the 500 freestyles (30.06) while Victoria Metz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Tara O'Toole (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) were runners up in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.83) and the 200 freestyle (2:17.56), respectively.
 
Kaitlyn Pawcio (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) earned her third regional-qualifying score on the one-meter diving board with a mark of 259.00. She also turned in a score of 248 on the three-meter board.
 
The swimming & diving teams will be back in competition on Saturday, Jan. 27, for a road Presidents' Athletic Conference dual at Grove City beginning at 1:00 p.m.
