Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Buyan scores twice in No. 18 W&J’s 2-1 OT win over Wooster

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) scored both goals for the No. 18-ranked Washington & Jefferson field hockey team in its 2-1 overtime victory over Wooster on Tuesday, Oct 16.

With the win tonight, the Presidents improve to a perfect 13-0 this season, while the Fighting Scots fall to 10-5 on the year. Wooster's goal at the end of regulation ended a four-game streak for W&J of not allowing its opponent to score.

Buyan secured the win for the Red & Black 7:30 into the first overtime. Following a Scots' goal off of a penalty corner as time expired in regulation, Buyan sent the home crowd home happy with a shot in the middle of the circle. Buyan beat the opposing goalie after she came off her line to kick the ball out of the circle.

The first of Buyan's scores came in the 45th minute. The senior defender again had the ball in the middle of the circle when she rocketed a high shot that took a deflection off of an opposing defender into the back of the cage. With two goals tonight, Buyan has 12 on the season, which is tied for third most in the Empire 8. The OT goal is also her fifth game-winner of the year, which ties a career high for the senior.

Buyan was at the center of a 29-4 shot advantage for the Presidents, as she and Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) led all players with eight shots apiece. In total, six Presidents that finished with multiple shots in the game.

Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) improved to 11-0 this year with her first overtime victory of the season. Israel made two saves in the bout, while her goal allowed is just her second of 2018.

W&J will return to Empire 8 action on Saturday, Oct 20, for a 1 p.m. tilt against Houghton in Houghton, N.Y.
