Field Hockey checks into NFHCA rankings for first time at No. 19

GILBERT, Ariz. -- For the first time in program history, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team has been listed on the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll, pulling in a No. 19 national ranking.

Led by 12th-year head coach Jomara Coghlan, W&J enters the week 8-0 overall, one of just six remaining unbeaten teams in the nation, and 3-0 in Empire 8 conference play. The Presidents have played the eighth-toughest schedule according to opponents' winning percentage (46-21, .687), and have allowed just two goals to their opposition. The two goals allowed and team goals against average of 0.24 are both best in Division III, as is W&J's 0.75 shutouts per game. The team's save percentage of .889 is fourth in the nation. The Red & Black are holding opponents to just 4.5 shots per game.

Individually, sophomore goalie Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) boasts a 6-0 record and leads the country in both save percentage (.923) and goals against average (.170). She began the campaign with a personal scoreless streak of over 380 minutes, before seeing that snapped in Saturday's 2-1 Empire 8 win over St. John Fisher.

Offensively, senior Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison), an all-region performer the last two seasons, paces the team with four goals and nine points. Classmates Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) are tied for second with three goals apiece, with Boyd also added a pair of assists to rank second on the squad with eight points.

W&J will be back in action for nonconference play at Cameron Stadium tomorrow night at 7 p.m. when Frostburg State (Md.) comes to town.
