Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 18 W&J upset by Juniata, 2-1, for first loss of 2018

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The No. 18 Washington & Jefferson field hockey team surrendered two unanswered goals after opening the scoring before dropping its first contest of 2018 by a 2-1 count in nonconference action against Juniata.

The loss snaps the Presidents program-record 14-game winning streak, while W&J had been just one of three remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA Division III. Still, the Red & Black find themselves with a 14-1 overall record and close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. Empire 8 match against Elmira on Saturday, Oct. 27, before hosting the league tournament next Friday-Saturday, Nov. 2-3 at Cameron Stadium.

Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) scored the first goal of the game 19:04 into play off a pass from Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor) in the middle of the circle in front of the cage, for her third tally of the season. Juniata answered back just 2:05 later to knot the match at 1-1, and fired in the eventual game-winning goal with just under 16 minutes remaining in the second half.

After boasting a 6-1 advantage on shots through the first 35 minutes, W&J was held without a shot in the second half -- the first time this season that has happened. The Eagles led for the game, 7-6. Fromm paced the Presidents with three shots (all on goal), while Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) each placed a shot on target and Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) sent a shot wide.

Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) made four saves in the match, but suffered the first defeat of her career and fell to 12-1 overall this season. The sophomore's goals against average is still a staggeringly good 0.31 and her save percentage an impressive .882.
