No. 17 W&J locks up 26th PAC title with 33-14 win at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – For the 26th time, the No. 17/18 Washington & Jefferson football team is the champion of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, and for the 26th time the Presidents will be making an appearance in the NCAA Division III Football Championship field, after a 33-14 win at Waynesburg.

Sophomore running back EJ Thompson (La Plata, Md./Thomas Stone) ran for a career-high 186 yards and a touchdown, while junior running back Jordan West (Washington, Pa./Washington) rushed for 138 yards and two scores as the Presidents racked up 359 yards on the ground. The 359 rushing yards are the most for the Red & Black since rolling to 367 yards rushing at Thiel on Nov. 8, 2014. It also represented the first time W&J had two ball carriers go over 100 yards in the same game since Pete Coughlin and Austin Kemp did it on Oct. 29, 2016 against Saint Vincent.

Both of West's scores came 2:23 apart, at the 1:26-mark of the first quarter (five yards) and 14:03-mark of the second quarter (two yards), to give W&J a 20-0 lead, while Thompson found pay dirt with 8:31 to play in the fourth period on a 14-yard scamper to seal the game at 33-14.

Sophomore wide receiver Andrew Wolf (Ashland, Ohio/Hillsdale) went over 100 yards for the eighth time this season, catching six passes for 127 yards. More importantly, Wolf caught two touchdown passes on the day, which gives him 21 on the season, a new W&J and PAC record and the most receiving TDs in a season in Division III since Tyler Rutenback of Dubuque hauled in 22 during the 2013 regular season. Wolf began the scoring on the day 7:48 into the action when he caught a seven-yard scoring strike from junior quarterback Jacob Adams (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville). He added his second, record-breaking grab on a 65-yard streaking catch-and-run with 4:41 to play in the third quarter.

Adams finished the day 13-of-18 for 173 yards and two TDs. The 18 attempts were a season-low, while the 13 completions matched his fewest amount of the year (at St. John Fisher on Sept. 1).

W&J more than doubled up Waynesburg in total yardage, 532-226, the sixth time the Presidents have gone over 500 yards of offense this season. It is also the third-straight week that W&J has held its opponent to 250 or fewer yards and the fourth time this season the Presidents have achieved that.

Defensively, junior linebacker Nick Getz (Tyrone, Pa./Tyrone) and sophomore linebacker Sean Doran (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) tied for the team lead with seven tackles apiece. Getz matched junior defensive lineman Jeffrey Oxner (Silver Spring, Md./Bullis School) with 1.5 tackles for loss as part of W&J's seven TFLs on the day. Junior defensive lineman Mike Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Langley) recorded the lone sack of the afternoon for the Red & Black and senior safety Zac Quattrone (White Oak, Pa./Serra Catholic) had an interception and pass break-up to go with six tackles, while fellow senior safety Zach Royba (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) also added six stops.

W&J finishes the regular season with a 9-1 overall record and 8-1 mark in the PAC. The 2018 NCAA Division III Football Championship field will be released with a selection show on NCAA.com tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 11, at 5:30 p.m. Details of W&J's first-round opponent, as well as the site of the game will be on gopresidents.com shortly thereafter. The first round contest will be on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018 at 12 p.m. local time.
