W&J stumbles in home-opening meet versus Westminster

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson swimming & diving teams opened the home portion of their 2018-19 schedule with losses to Westminster, as the men were edged 137-90 and the women suffered a 115-67 defeat on Wednesday, Nov. 14. 

On the men's side, four Presidents sealed wins in individual events tonight. Colin Higinbotham (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) and Dean Kralic (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) finished first or second in multiple events to lead the way for the Presidents. Higinbotham was the lone W&J competitor to win twice taking both the 50 freestyle (22.31) and the 100 freestyle (49.96). Kralic, on the other hand, won the 100 butterfly (54.98) and came second in both the 200 fly (2:07.33) and the 200 free (1:55.85). Higinbotham, Kralic, Jack Cusick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), and Zach Lauer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) also combined to take the 400 freestyle relay. 

Both Cusick and Andrew Ivory (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars) won once individually, with the former taking the 200 freestyle (1:51.70) and the latter winning the 400 individual medley (4:39.21). Jeremy Glasner (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) took second in the 100 backstroke (59.44), 500 free (5:20.71), and the 400 IM (4:46.70).  

For the women, both Kiera MacWhinnie (South Portland, Maine/Waynflete School) and Kimber Randolph (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) placed first in individual swimming events. MacWhinnie won both the 100 fly (2:32.28) and 200 backstroke (1:09.67). Randolph took first in the 100 back (1:07.00) and 400 IM (5:32.83). 

As for divers, Kaitlyn Pawcio (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) had a stellar day, winning both the one-meter (218.93) and three-meter events (194.93). Callie Wiebel (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) came in second to Pawcio in the one-meter event with a score of 130.05. 

Both Presidents teams will return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 17, for a road meet against Pitt-Bradford, which is slated to start at 1 p.m.
