WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Saint Vincent held Washington & Jefferson to 28 percent shooting in the first half and held off a late Presidents' rally to earn a 69-58 PAC women's basketball victory on Wednesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.
Maria Morgan drilled 5-of-6 three-pointers for the Bearcats (4-2, 1-0) in the PAC opener for both squads. Morgan finished with 15 points and four assists.
The Bearcats held the Presidents (2-5, 0-1) without a field goal for over five minutes in the second quarter to build a 12-point lead (29-17) with 1:35 left in the opening half. A three-point play by
Alie Seto brought W&J to within 29-20 at the break.
A Morgan triple early in the third quarter made it a 14-point game (36-22) before the Presidents rallied.
Lauren Gilbert's three-point play with six seconds left in the quarter narrowed the gap to 43-41, but Morgan knocked down a three-pointer as the quarter ended for a 46-41 advantage.
Kylie McKennen's basket at the 5:29 mark forced a 52-52 tie, the first time W&J had evened the score since the 5:46 mark of the first quarter. However, Paige Montrose answered with a jumper and back-to-back triples by Jenna Lafko and Morgan helped SVC pull away.
Seto collected a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead W&J.
Danielle Parker posted nine points and 11 rebounds, while Gilbert finished with nine points and nine boards. Both teams shot under 36 percent (SVC: 22-62; W&J: 19-56).
The Presidents continue the early portion of their PAC schedule on Saturday at Geneva (1:00 pm).
