PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Double-doubles from both
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Izzy Allen (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) guided Washington & Jefferson women's basketball to a 64-56 victory over Chatham in road PAC action on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
With the win tonight, W&J improves to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in league play. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 5-4 overall, with tonight's result being the team's first setback of the year in conference.
The first half was tightly contested with neither team holding a lead larger than four points. Both the Presidents and Cougars stayed in contention with solid shooting, as W&J owned a .519 field goal percentage (14-of-27), compared to Chatham's .478 (11-of-23). The big difference in the half came down to the Cougars' ability to benefit off turnovers, turning W&J's 12 turnovers into 10 points. The Presidents, on the other hand, scored just two points off of 10 Chatham miscues.
In the second half, the Presidents began to use their size to get an edge in the game. W&J outrebounded Chatham 25-20 in the half. This rebounding resurgence was led by Allen, who had nine boards in the final 20 minutes. These rebounding numbers were facilitated by the Cougars' shooting woes in the half, as the Presidents held Chatham to 9-for-34 (26.5 percent) shooting from the floor in the stanza.
Parker led all players with 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her second double-double this season. Allen posted the most impressive performance of her rookie season, tallying season highs in both points (14) and rebounds (11) for her first career double-double. Parker and Allen also finished first and second on the team with four and three assists, respectively.
Also putting in stellar outings were
Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown). Gilbert recorded her seventh double-digit scoring performance of the year with 11 points to go along with three rebounds and two steals. McDaniel filled up the stat sheet with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Presidents will return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 15, with a home 1 p.m. bout against Westminster.
