WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson's freshmen combined for 57 points to help lead the Presidents to a 95-48 win over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Henry Memorial Gymnasium.
The rookie trio of
Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville),
Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and
Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) accounted for 53 of those 57 points scored by W&J's freshmen. Seto and Lawhorne both recorded season highs with 26 and 17 points, respectively. Seto was 8-of-10 from the floor, 2-for-3 from beyond-the-arc and 8-for-9 at the free-throw line to go with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Lawhorne made 7-of-11 shots from the floor, tied for the team lead with eight rebounds and added a game-best four assists. Gilbert added 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Senior
Mya Gordon (Washington, Pa./Washington) was also in double figures with 12 points, while
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) added eight points, eight boards, three assists and two steals.
The game was tight through the first 15:30 after a 6-0 run by Thiel made it a six-point game, 29-23, with 4:31 to play in the second quarter. The next 6:40 -- crossing over into the second half -- was all Presidents, however, as W&J used a 23-6 run to gain ground, including making the halftime lead 43-29. A 17-0 W&J run was part of the larger spurt and came from 1:59 remaining in the second quarter until the 7:51 mark of the third period. Gordon scored 10 of her 12 points during the run as W&J made 11-of-15 free throws during the stretch.
A 10-0 run with six points by Seto near the end of the third got the lead to more than 30 points, 66-35, but after a pair of Thiel free throws to begin the fourth quarter, W&J ran off 21-straight points (10 by Seto, nine from Lawhorne and another two by
Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central)) to march the margin to over 50 points, 89-39.
The 95 points were tied for the seventh-most in a single game in program history and had previous been done twice: Feb. 17, 2001 against Thiel and Feb. 3, 1993 against Bethany.
W&J held Thiel to 26.5 percent (13-of-49) from the floor, the seventh time this season the Presidents have forced their opponents under 30 percent, and the sixth-straight game in which the opposition connected on less than 40 percent of their attempts. W&J also held advantages of 48-10 in the paint, 24-8 off turnovers, 25-4 second-chance points and 55-11 off the bench.
The Presidents improve to 19-3 on the season, moving within one win of the 13th 20-win campaign in program history. W&J is also now 13-2 in the PAC and hosts Bethany at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. Senior Day festivities with precede Saturday's game against the Bison.
