Schnatterly's complete game leads No. 3 W&J to doubleheader split

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Senior Bryce Schnatterly (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) tossed his third career complete game to help the No. 3 Washington & Jefferson baseball team to a doubleheader split with Oberlin on Saturday, March 10, at Ross Memorial Park.

Game one went to the Yeomen by a 5-4 score while the Presidents took game two, 5-1.

Schnatterly pitched not only effectively but also efficiently in game two as the right-hander completed the nine-inning complete game on just 98 pitches. He scattered three hits in the nightcap, allowing one earned run in the Presidents' win, walked two, struck out five hitters and forced Oberlin to hit into four double plays. The nine innings pitched are a career high for Schnatterly, with his other two career complete games being seven-inning contests.

Offensively, W&J gave Schnatterly plenty of early run support by hanging four runs on the Oberlin pitching in the second inning. The frame started with a walk to Justin Griffin (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East). Two batters later, Dante Dalesandro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) brought Griffin around to score with a triple down the right field line before Spencer Howell (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) drove Dalesandro in on the next pitch with a single through the left side.

After stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Howell scored on a sacrifice fly from Luke Zahren (Ingomar, Pa./North Allegheny) to put W&J up 3-0. Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius) then singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home courtesy of a Ryan Sciullo (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) RBI single to left center.

The fifth W&J run came home in the fourth inning when Zahren walked, advanced to third on a single from Socha and then scored on a sac fly from Dan Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).

In game one, the Presidents trailed 5-0 entering the home half of the eighth inning after allowing the Yeomen to score twice in the third inning and three times in the sixth. W&J got one run back in the bottom of the eighth when Trettel singled and was brought home by Mark Merlino (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) two batters later.

Trailing by four runs in the final frame, Shayne Erny (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) led off with a walk and advanced to third two batters later on a single from Howell. After Zahren singled to bring in Erny, Socha grounded out to advance Howell and Zahren to third and second, respectively.

A single from Trettel scored both runners to reduce the Oberlin lead to 5-4, but the game ended two batters later on a ground out to give the Yeomen the game one win.

Matt Heslin (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) (0-1) was the losing pitcher in the doubleheader-opening game, going 6.0 innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Garrett Harstine (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) and Tanner Gaerke (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) pitched the final three innings and retired all nine batters they faced on a combined 30 pitches to keep the Presidents within striking distance.

Trettel led the W&J offense going 4-for-7 over the two games with a double, three RBI, a stolen base and a walk. Sciullo (game one), Socha (game two) and Howell (game two) all recorded multiple hits in one of the two games today while eight different Presidents had at least one hit on the day.

W&J will be back in action on Sunday, March 11, to battle La Roche in nonconference action at 1:00 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park with both games being seven innings.
