W&J wins twice on Monday, besting Farmingdale State and Worcester State

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Washington & Jefferson swept its pair of games on Monday afternoon to get to 2-4 through the first six games of the 2018 PFX Spring Games.

The Presidents gave first-year head coach Marissa Rush her first victory at the helm by exploding for six runs in the fifth inning of a 9-4 victory against Farmingdale State (N.Y.) and secured the second win of the day by hanging on to best Worcester State (Mass.) by a 5-4 count.

W&J fell behind 3-1 before getting an RBI single from second baseman Rachel Johnson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) in the bottom of the fourth to get within one run at 3-2 against Farmingdale State. FSU answered by getting the run right back in the top of the fifth before the Presidents had their big inning in the bottom half.

Right fielder Ally Doty (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) led off with a single and W&J added another base runner when first baseman Danielle Kochka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) was hit by a pitch two batters later. Pitcher Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) helped her own cause with an RBI double to center to make it 4-3, and a walk to third baseman Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) loaded the bases with one out. Left fielder Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) then lined a two-run double to center for her first career hit, giving the Presidents a 5-4 lead over the Rams. Two batters later, Johnson belted her first career home run to right center, a three-run shot to cap the scoring in the inning and make it an 8-4 margin.W&J tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when McCleester's second double scored Jamie Smith (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) from second.

Johnson finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, with Doty and McCleester also collecting multi-hit efforts. McCleester had three RBI and six of W&J's seven walks were earned by three players with two apiece: center fielder Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour), Kochka and Lapia.

Andres scored her first win of the year by going the distance and surrendering six hits and four runs. She struck out four and got 10 outs on the ground. She came into game two against Worcester State and worked the final 1.2 innings of one-hit action before closing the door with the first save of her career. Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) earned her first victory this season by tossing the first 5.1 innings and giving up eight hits and four runs.

W&J struck quickly against the Lancers with three runs in the top of the first inning as the first five Presidents reached base safely. Johnson led off with a double and a walk by Parker and bunt single by Doty loaded the bases for third baseman Addy Helffrich (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth), who delivered a two-run single to left center. McCleester later drove home the third run of the frame with a sacrifice fly down the right-field line, 3-0.

The Presidents added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning where, with two outs, four-straight singles was capped by a two-run base knock by Doty. WSU challenged with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Andres slammed the door and gave W&J its first sweep of the season.

Johnson ran her hitting streak to eight games thanks to a pair of hits in the night cap. Doty also had two hits and two RBI, while shortstop Meghan Staab (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) had a pair of base hits and Helffrich added a pair of RBIs.

W&J will resume play in Florida on Wednesday, March 21 with games against SUNY New Paltz (9:00 a.m.) and Thomas (Maine) (11:30 a.m.) at Hancock Park.
