NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson suffered two Presidents' Athletic Conference losses at the hands of league undefeated Westminster, dropping 1-0 and 7-3 decisions.
Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) was saddled with the tough-luck loss in the opener despite surrendering just one run and four hits in the contest. Second baseman
Rachel Johnson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) extended her hitting streak to 19 games to open the year with a lead-off single to open the game. Left fielder
Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) accounted for the lone other hit in the game for W&J, stroking a one-out double in the fifth inning.
In the second game, the Presidents struck for three runs in the top of the first. Johnson walked and stole second before center fielder
Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) also walked. Right fielder
Ally Doty (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) sacrificed both runners up a base and McCleester delivered an RBI single to score one run. After McCleester stole second, first baseman
Danielle Kochka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) reached on a bunt single which plated Parker, and, with two outs, third baseman
Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) hit an RBI single to left, 3-0.
Westminster would go on to score twice in the first, third and sixth innings and once in the fourth to take 7-3 win.
W&J had eight hits in the night cap, with McCleester and Kochka both tallying two, but Johnson's hitting streak came to a close at 19 games as the junior was held hitless for the first time this year.
With tomorrow's scheduled nonconference doubleheader already postponed to a later date to be determined, W&J will next hit the diamond for a home PAC doubleheader against Geneva at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17. We hope. Some cooperation from the weather would be splendid.
