Presidents' "Hearts Are In It" as W&J defeats Hanover 9-4

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- In a women's lacrosse match where Washington & Jefferson both recognized its three seniors and raised money for the American Heart Association, the Presidents triumphed over Hanover, 9-4.

The event was part of W&J's "Our Hearts Are In It" fundraiser in which the Presidents have raised more than $2,500 for the American Heart Association. Prior to the match, the Presidents recognized their three senior members who were playing in the final regular season matches at Alexandre Stadium: Sierra Meyer (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland), Caroline Kallos (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Katherine Hooper (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield).

W&J jumped out to a 5-1 halftime lead behind the first five goals of the contest. Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) got the scoring started 4:12 into play and Kallos stretched the lead to 2-0 just 18 seconds later. Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) tallied a pair of goals just over seven minutes apart and Kayla Boulas (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) capped the goals for the half at the 8:13 mark.

Miller and Kallos against went back-to-back to begin the second half and make it a 7-1 margin. After Hanover cut the lead to 7-2, LaRochelle and Boulas (woman up) scored their third and second goals, respectively, of the afternoon, 9-2. The Panthers found the back of the cage twice in the final 11:47 to set the final result at 9-4.

Kallos tied for the game high with four caused turnovers and three draw controls, while also scooping a match-best five ground balls. Katelyn White (Linthicum, Md./North County) matched Kallos with four caused turnover and three ground balls, with Miller, LaRochelle, Meyer and Allison Onslow (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) each snagging three GBs.

Sara Maute (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J Roberts) picked up her 10th win of the season by making eight saves in the victory.

The Presidents improve to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference with the win. Sunday's scheduled regular season home finale against Thomas More has been canceled due to a shortage of players in Crestview Hills, Ky. The game officially goes down as a no contest, but, for ORLC standings purposes, has been awarded as a win to W&J within the league. W&J travels to Waynesburg at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 in its penultimate match of the regular season.
