Helffrich's grand slam helps Presidents to sweep over Waynesburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman Addy Helffrich (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) connected on her first career grand slam as part of a five-run third inning in game one as the Washington & Jefferson softball team swept Waynesburg at Brooks Park.

The Presidents claimed a six-inning 8-0 win in the opener before securing a 5-3 victory in the night cap to improve to 11-17 overall this season and 7-9 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Helffrich's grand slam to left field came on an 0-1 count with one out and followed consecutive singles by second baseman Rachel Johnson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), center fielder Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and pitcher Taylor Andres (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) that loaded the bases. First baseman Danielle Kochka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) doubled as the next batter and went to third on a single by designated player Jamie Smith (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). The fifth run of the inning came in when Kochka scored on a squeeze bunt by right fielder Ally Doty (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson).

W&J tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-run single up the middle by third baseman Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley), and Smith ended the game due to the run rule in the sixth with a bases-loaded single to center, 8-0.

Andres improved to 9-7 on the season with her second shutout of the year and fifth of her career. The junior surrendered just four hits and struck out one, getting 11 outs on the ground.

Helffrich's four RBIs in the game established a new season high, while the home run was her second of the year. Kochka finished 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while the quartet of Parker, Andres, Smith and Doty each posted two hits.

In the second game, W&J struck for a pair in the first inning. With one out, Parker singled and then scored when the next batter, left fielder Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) doubled down the left-field line. Back-to-back singles by Helffrich and Kochka loaded the bases and McCleester crossed home plate when Smith reached on a fielder's choice.

Waynesburg got the two runs back in the top of the second, but W&J re-established the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by shortstop Meghan Staab (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks). The Yellow Jackets then tied tie game once again in the top of the fifth after a lead-off triple and wild pitch scored the runner.

Staab plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth with a squeeze bunt to make it a 4-3 game. W&J added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Kochka singled with one out to score McCleester, who had doubled to open the frame.

Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) picked up her second win in going the distance, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned), with one strike out and two walks.

Kockha had another solid game, going 3-for-4 with a double in the night cap, while McCleester had a pair of doubles in going 2-for-4 with two runs. Smith and Parker each contributed a pair of base knocks, and Johnson added a double.

W&J will have its Senior Day ceremonies prior to Saturday's PAC finale doubleheader against Chatham at 1 p.m. at Brooks Park.
