Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) scored the game-tying goal with 27 seconds remaining in regulation before
Pat Heidecker (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) broke the tie 19 seconds into overtime as Washington & Jefferson took down Hanover, 10-9.
After
Michael Aaron Pray III (Gaithersburg, Md./Maret School (D.C.)) won the overtime-opening face-off clean, the Presidents called a time out to set up their offense. Not long after, Heidecker cut through the middle in front of the cage and took a pass from
Ben Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) before firing past the Hanover goalie for the winning score. Mandak's game-tying and unassisted goal near the end of regulation match a Panthers' score 33 seconds earlier that had initially broken an 8-8 tie.
W&J fell behind by as many as three goals, 5-2, in the second. After Ward got W&J within one with 3:41 left before halftime, Hanover stretched the halftime lead to 6-4 with three seconds in the second quarter. Again, the Panthers beat the buzzer in a quarter, this time scoring as time expired in the third period to hold an 8-6 lead after 45 minutes.
The Presidents' 3-1 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter led to overtime. Ward got within one at 8-7 with 8:20 remaining off a pass from
Brendan Tribeck (Enola, Pa./Trinity) and then
Reilly Oliverio (Enola, Pa./Trinity) tied it with 6:54 to play with the assist going to
Liam Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers).
Ward had three goals and two assists for five points for his seventh hat trick of the season and 16th of his career. Mandak had two goals and an assist, while Tribeck and
Rocco Ruscitto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) each tallied a goal and an assist.
Joseph Tritschler (New Kensington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) had a match-high seven ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Lorenzo Ruscitto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), playing in his final game in Red & Black, caused three turnovers and had his first career assist. Pray picked up four ground balls and won 15-of-22 face-offs. It was the 10th time this season he has won double-digit face-offs in a single game, while his 190 face-off wins are the most in a single season in program history and the sixth-most in a career.
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) made 17 saves in goal, his 14th time this season in double figures and the eighth-straight match. He finishes the 2018 campaign with 241 saves, giving him the top two single-season save totals in program history, while his 504 saves in two seasons are already third for a W&J career.
