Presidents win fourth straight, top John Carroll, 3-0

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson women's volleyball team extended its current win streak to a season-long four matches by besting John Carroll, 3-0, to begin the Hiram College Invitational on Friday, Sept. 14.

With the victory tonight, the Presidents improved to 5-4 on the season. The scores by set were 25-20, 28-26, 25-17, W&J's third consecutive straight-set win.

The Red & Black employed a balanced offensive effort in the triumph tonight, as four Presidents logged at least six kills. Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) led the way with a team-high nine kills, while Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler), Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)), and Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy) were not far behind with eight, seven, and six kills, respectively.

Defensively, Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and Madison Simpson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) paced the team with 12 digs apiece. Lydic also finished the match with the team lead in blocks with five. Eich and Jacques were right behind her, as they both tallied four blocks. Both Lydic and Eich's block totals are season highs for the seniors.

The Presidents will continue the Hiram College Invitational tomorrow afternoon with matches against the host Terriers and Albion. The doubleheader will begin with a 1 p.m. clash against Hiram.
