W&J wins third-straight 1-0 decision, blanks Denison on the road

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) scored on a drive from 15 yards out off of a penalty corner from Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) as Washington & Jefferson won its third-straight 1-0 decision by defeating Denison on the road.

The Presidents posted their fifth shutout of the season in the process of improving to 6-0 with the victory. For the first time in program history, W&J was listed among "Other Receiving Votes" in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll, which was released earlier on Tuesday. Denison, the defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion, drops to 5-2 on the season after seeing its three-game winning streak snapped.

Karr's drive came at the 55:34-mark of the match after Buyan sent in the corner. While being the only goal in the match, the Presidents needed to step up the defense after that as goalie Jennifer Dietrich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) turned away a shot off a penalty corner with under five minutes remaining and then was called to action during a penalty stroke with 1:55 left. On the stroke, Dietrich made a diving save to the right to save the stroke and turn away one final burst from the Big Red.

Dietrich picked up her second win of the year to improve to 2-0 after making two saves in the win.

In the match, W&J held a dominating 10-2 advantage on shots behind a 9-1 margin in the second half. Shots on goal were 6-2, with Buyan and Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) both registering two shots on cage. Karr led all players with three total shots.

W&J will hit the road for its first Empire 8 away contest, traveling to Rochester, N.Y., and Nazareth for a 12 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 22.
