WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Second-half goals by
Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) lifted the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Shenandoah in the Presidents' 2018 home opener on Sunday, Sept. 2.
With the win, W&J begins the season 2-0 following a 3-0 victory over Wittenberg to kick off the year on Friday, Aug. 31. Today's triumph marks the team's first 2-0 start since the 2016 campaign and evens the all-time series against Shenandoah at 5-5.
Following an evenly-fought first half that ended 0-0, the Presidents scored the game's first goal at the 49:11 mark of the second half. Fromm tallied the eventual game winner with a tip-in at the far post off a cross from
Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison).
Buyan iced the contest 7:26 later with a tap-in from the two-yard line. Fromm earned the assist on the play to tie a career high with three points on the afternoon.
In cage,
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) continued her strong start to the year by earning her second-straight clean sheet. The sophomore goalie registered one save on the afternoon, which gives her three on the year and a 140-minute scoreless streak to begin her tenure in goal.
The Presidents will have a week off from competition before beginning a two-game road trip on Sunday, Sept. 9, against Kenyon at 12 p.m.
