Presidents win first game of 2018 to close out season-opening weekend

Date: Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018. 
Where: Highland Pool – Pittsburgh, Pa.
Opponent: Mercyhurst
Result: L, 20-7
 
How it Happened: The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team opened its 2018 campaign with a 20-7 setback to Mercyhurst on Saturday, Sept. 2.
 
Top Performers: Jeremy Glasner (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and Robert Koch (Worcester, Pa./La Salle College) each scored twice to kick off the new season. 
 
The Rest: Will Kitsch (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Troy Smith (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos), and Dylan Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) combined to score W&J's three remaining goals.

Opponent: Gannon
Result: L, 10-5
 
How it Happened: The Presidents dropped their second game of the day to Gannon, 10-5, to cap the opening day of the season. 

Top Performer: Goalie Nick Spehar (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) made 17 stops to help keep the contest close. Dustin Reinke (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan) led the Presidents' offense with a pair of goals in the tilt. 

The Rest: Kitsch, Smith, and Cam Spicer (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) all scored a goal against the Golden Knights, while Gwinn paced the team with two assists. 


Date: Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018.
Where: Henry Memorial Natatorium – Washington, Pa.
Opponent: Penn State Behrend
Result: W, 8-7
 
How it Happened: W&J picked up its first win of the year to close out its season-opening weekend, an 8-7 result against Penn State Behrend. 

Top Performer: Smith scored three goals against the Lions to lead the Presidents. Spehar made 12 blocks in the match to pick up his first victory of the season. 

The Rest: Kitsch tallied two goals to finish second on the team in scoring, the latter of which went down as the game-winner with 1:44 left in the bout. 

What's Next: The Presidents will return to the pool on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they will take part in the two-day Mercyhurst Invitational in Erie, Pa.
