WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson men's basketball was unable to hold on to a second-half lead against Waynesburg today in home PAC action, as the Presidents fell by an 83-76 final score.Â
Today's setback ends W&J's four-game win streak in PAC play. The Red & Black are now 6-9 overall this season with a 4-2 mark in conference.Â
Strong runs by both teams highlighted Today's bout. The Yellow Jackets stormed ahead early with stellar three-point shooting. By the 14:29 mark of the first half, Waynesburg went ahead 12 points, 17-5, by making three of its first four treys.Â
The Presidents' defense settled in over the remainder of the half, as they went on an 8-2 run of their own over the next 2:30 to cut the deficit to 19-15. Another surge near the end of the stanza put the Red & Black up 41-39 going into the break.Â
Zach Queen (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield Area) sparked the comeback with back-to-back three-pointers to give W&J a 36-34 advantage at the three-minute mark. For the half, Queen tallied 11 points on a trio of three-pointers.Â
The start of the second half saw both teams trade the lead until the Presidents secured multiple double-digit advantages. The latest W&J double-digit lead came with the Red & Black up 71-61 with 5:45 left.Â
It was at this point that Waynesburg's lights-out offense returned. A 16-5 run by the Yellow Jackets stole all W&J's momentum and swung the score to 77-76 in favor of the road team. The lead would not change hands again, as Waynesburg, who went a perfect 14-for-14 from the line in the game, hit its final six free throws to secure the victory.Â
Nicholas Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) led the way for the Presidents with his third double-double on the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds, both of which tie career highs. He was fantastic from the floor, shooting 6-for-8 (75.0 percent).Â
