Seniors rally W&J past Westminster in PAC Tournament Semifinals

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Seniors Megan Berard (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) and Jade Annaldo (North Kingstown, R.I./Scituate) recorded the final two points as the No. 2 Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team rallied for a 5-3 victory over No. 3 Westminster College in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.

The win, which is the eighth straight for the Presidents, advances the Red and Black to the PAC Championship match on Saturday against No. 1 Grove City. The Wolverines won by a 5-0 decision over No. 4 Geneva earlier in the day to advance to the title match.

Due to threat of inclement weather, Saturday's match has been moved from Washington to the Greensburg Racquet Club with a 3 p.m. start.

After dropping two of the three doubles matches, the Presidents rallied back to win four of the five matches in singles play. Caitlin Shellhamer (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) and Berard stepped up at third doubles, as the senior tandem delivered an 8-3 victory for the Presidents lone win in doubles play.

Maya Krishnasamy (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) started the comeback for W&J, as the sophomore picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Margo Mason at first singles.

Shellhamer helped keep the momentum on the Presidents' side, as the senior registered a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over McKenna Robinson at fifth singles to even the team score at 3-3.

Annaldo helped flip things in W&J's favor with a clutch comeback victory at fourth singles. After dropping the first set by a 6-4 score and then facing a 3-0 deficit in the second set, the senior battled back to record the next six points for a 6-3 second set win. Annaldo then held on for a 6-4 win in the third set over the previously unbeaten Sabrina Slagle, who entered the match with a 15-0 record in singles play this season.

That set the stage for Berard, who like Annaldo battled back after dropping the opening set by a 6-4 score. Berard secured a 6-3 win in the second set before holding off a late rally to secure a 6-4 victory in the third set to clinch the match.

Isabella Goldman's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) match went unfinished at second singles due to the match being clinched by Berard. The freshman dropped the first set 6-1 before claiming a 7-6 win in the second set. Goldman was up 1-0 in the third set when the match was clinched.

The Presidents hold a 10-5 record in 2019 while Westminster falls to 13-3. Two of Titans' three losses this season have come against the Presidents.

This is the second year the PAC Championship Tournament is using a team championship bracket format. The league had previously sponsored a flighted championship, with individual players and doubles pairings exclusively seeded and not based on a team's regular-season finish, since supporting a full complement of women's sports (1985-2017). W&J is playing for its first-ever PAC team title.
