Volleyball drops 3-0 decision at Geneva


BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 road loss to Geneva College Tuesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action in Beaver County. 
 
The host Golden Tornadoes registered the victory in straight sets, winning by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-22 over the Presidents. 
 
The Presidents led throughout the first set before building a three-point advantage (21-18). However, the Golden Tornadoes responded with seven straight points to take the opening set by a 25-21 score. Geneva used an eight-point run midway through the second set to pull away for a 25-17 victory.

The third set was once again competitive, as the Red and Black eventually gained a 16-15 edge over the GT's. After an exchange of points back and forth the score was tied at 21-21. Geneva finished off the sweep by recording four of the final five points to take the third by a 25-22 score. 

Senior outside hitter Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) tallied seven kills, recorded a .273 hitting percentage and recorded 14 digs in the loss. Senior libero Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) registered a team-high 16 digs for W&J. Senior setter Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) picked up 17 assists to move into second place in career assists during the rally scoring era. O'Brien (2,877) surpassed Andrea Motto (2,869) on W&J's career assists list.
 
Daphne Hunsinger recorded a triple-double effort for Geneva. The GT's setter finished with 12 kills, 27 assists and 12 digs in the victory. 

The loss drops W&J to 4-21 overall and 3-11 in conference play. Geneva improves to 20-7 overall and 11-3 in PAC contests. 

W&J hosts Chatham for Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 31. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Henry Memorial Center. Senior Night festivities will be held prior to the start of the match.
