Late goal not enough as W&J falls at Juniata, 2-1

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- A pair of early second half goals lifted Juniata College to a 2-1 victory over the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team in non-conference play Wednesday evening.

After a scoreless first half that saw the two teams combine for just three total shots, the host Eagles struck for two goals in a two minute span early in the third quarter. Olivia Marker opened the scoring with a goal in the 31st minute before assisting a Sarah Bryer score in the 32nd minute.

Juniata held the two-goal advantage until the final minutes of the contest. Junior Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor) scored off a pass from senior Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) with just 1:48 remaining in the game. The goal was the fourth of the season for Dunn. The assist was the third of the season for Fromm.

Following the Dunn goal, the Eagles were able to run out the remainder of the clock to escape with the victory.

The two teams combined for just nine shots in the rain soaked contest. Juniata tallied five shots while W&J recorded four. Each team put two shots on goal in the match. Juniata registered seven penalty corner attempts while W&J had two chances on penalty corners.

The loss drops W&J to 8-7 overall in 2019. The win improves Juniata to 9-8 this season.

W&J hosts Hartwick College for Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 2. Start time for Saturday's tilt is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Cameron Stadium. The game has Empire 8 Tournament implications for both teams, as the two squads will be looking to clinch a spot in the upcoming four-team tournament next week at St. John Fisher College.
