Presidents Post Fourth-Straight Win at Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A first-quarter goal from Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) propelled the Washington & Jefferson field hockey squad to a 1-0 victory at Empire 8 foe Elmira on Saturday afternoon.

The victory is the fourth-straight for the Presidents (6-4, 2-1 E8) and marks the third shutout in the last four contests.

The Presidents opened the game on the offensive, forcing four penalty corners and firing five shots in the game's first five minutes.

In the seventh minute, freshman Josephine Robson (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) inserted the Presidents' fifth penalty corner of the day. Senior Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) fired a ball towards the cage where Bobrovnikova tipped the ball in from the left post for her first goal of the season.

W&J carried a 1-0 lead into the half as neither team attempted a shot and the Presidents recorded one penalty corner in the second quarter.

Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor) each fired shots on cage but were turned away by Elmira's Tina O'Donnell in the third quarter.

W&J recorded another four shots and a penalty corner in the fourth, but were unable to add to their lead.

Overall, the Presidents totaled 15 shots, 12 shots on goal and 11 penalty corners.

The W&J defense turned in another stellar effort, limiting Elmira to a total of four shots, none of which were on goal. The only goal that W&J has allowed on this current four-game winning streak was a penalty stroke by Nazareth.

Lindsey Diggan (Silver Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) registered four shots on goal to lead the Presidents, while Hubbard and Dunn addded two each.

The Presidents continue Empire 8 play on Saturday when W&J hosts The Sage Colleges at Cameron Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
