WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Jake Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) scored in the 10
th minute and it was enough for the Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team to win 1-0 over Grove City on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents conclude their regular season undefeated in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play at 7-0-1. The win is W&J's first over Grove City since 2012 and clinches the top overall seed and hosting rights in next week's PAC Tournament. W&J claims the regular season title for the first time since the 2010 season.
Seniors
Christian Payne (South Park, Pa./South Park) and
Ryan Cerbus (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) set the table for Fetterman's game winner in the early stages of the afternoon. Payne sent a corner kick into the box, where Cerbus directed it towards the left post where Fetterman was waiting to bury his fifth tally of the season.
Fetterman's goal marked the sixth-straight game with a point for the President junior.
Payne and Fetterman each managed two shots on target in the first half after the early goal but were turned away each time. The Presidents held Grove City to four shots, none on goal in the first half.
The Presidents looked to build their lead in the second half, but a volley from
Alvaro Viadas (Burgos, Spain) sailed high and a header from
Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Central Catholic) drifted wide. W&J managed three shots on goal in the second half, but were unable to find an insurance tally.
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) made a diving save on a free kick in the 70
th minute and thwarted a prime Grove City opportunity by breaking up a pass in the open field in the following minutes.
The first half goal was enough for the W&J defense to work with as the Presidents limited the Wolverines to nine shots on the day with only two on target. W&J outshot the Wolverines 21-9 and had an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
Goalkeepers
Ian Donlon (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academies) and Miller split the Presidents' first shutout in league play. Donlon held Grove City scoreless in the first half and Miller carried the torch into the second half.
Depending on the result of tonight's Geneva at Westminster game, the W&J will host Geneva or Grove City at Alexandre Stadium on Wednesday evening in a PAC Tournament semifinal.
