Grove City downs W&J in PAC Tournament Semifinals

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The No. 2 seed Grove City Wolverines scored in each half as they downed No. 3 Washington & Jefferson 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals at Don Lyle Field in Mercer County.

The win advances Grove City (11-6-2) to Saturday's Championship match where they will host No. 4 seed Chatham. The Cougars upset No. 1 Westminster by a 1-0 margin Tuesday evening. The loss ends the Presidents season a 6-9-2. The Wolverines handed the Presidents their only two losses against PAC opponents.

Playing for the second time in four days, the host Wolverines came out with two shots and a corner kick in the first two minutes. Junior Brianna McGowan (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) registered the first shot on goal for W&J just 3:39 into the match.

After a shot wide of the net by junior Lexey Finney (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) and a corner kick opportunity for the Presidents, Grove City countered back with a sequence with three corner kicks. The Wolverines broke through with a goal off of a header by Jess Book off a pass from Colleen Zilka in the 24th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Shayla Watkins (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) recorded three saves over the remainder of the half to keep the deficit at 1-0.

The Wolverines tacked on an insurance goal in the 64th minute when Shannon Brawley snuck the ball just inside the post on the left side. Grove City made that lead hold up as W&J recorded just one more shot on goal the remainder of the game.

Grove City outshot W&J by a 22-11 margin, which included a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Wolverines earned seven corner kicks to two for the Presidents.

Finney paced the Presidents with three shots while senior Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) added two shots.
