LATROBE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball dropped its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at Saint Vincent 84-47 in a rematch of last winter's PAC championship game on Wednesday evening.
After trailing 4-0 in the first quarter, the Presidents used baskets from
Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) and
Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) to take a 5-4 advantage with 7:25 left in the first quarter. The Bearcats scored on the ensuing possession and led for the rest of the evening.
SVC led 24-16 after one quarter and proceeded to outscore W&J 46-18 over the second and third quarters. The Bearcats led by 20 at halftime and held a 36-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Alie Seto (Alison, Pa./Brownsville) paced W&J with 11 points and seven rebounds. Johnston added nine points and four rebounds while
Maddie Gutierrez (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) had six points.
The Presidents were limited to 27.1% shooting (16-of-59) from the field and were three-of-24 (12.5%) from the three-point line and 12-of-25 (48.0%) from the foul line. A season-high 24 turnovers led to 20 Saint Vincent points.
SVC's Jenna Lafko led all scorers with 26 points, followed by teammate Madison Kollar with 16.
W&J (5-3, 0-1 PAC) returns to the hardwood on Saturday when the Presidents host Geneva at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. for their conference home opener.
