W&J opens 2019 season with home invitational


Date: Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, 10:00 a.m. 
Where: Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. 
Opponent: Gannon University 
Result: Loss, 21-6 
 
How It Happened: The Washington & Jefferson women's water polo team opened the 2019 season with a 21-6 loss to Gannon University. 
 
Top Performer: Emma Rearson (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) led the way with a team-high three goals in the loss. 
 
The Rest: Paige Adams (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) recorded two scores while Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) added one goal. Cecelia Weiss (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) recorded nine saves in goal against the Golden Knights.

Opponent: McKendree University
Result: Loss, 22-4
 
How It Happened: The Presidents closed competition on Saturday evening with a 22-4 loss to McKendree University at Henry Memorial Natatorium. W&J trailed 13-4 after two periods before being outscored 9-0 over the final two periods. 
 
Top Performer: Marissa Whitby (Los Angeles, Calif./Eagle Rock) recorded two goals and three steals to lead W&J in the loss.
 
The Rest: Adams tallied a goal and an assist while Rearson registered a goal for the Presidents. 
 
Date: Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, 9:15 a.m. 
Where: Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. 
Opponent: Wittenberg University
Result: Won, 13-11
 
How It Happened: W&J outlasted Wittenberg, earning a 13-11 victory over the Tigers. 
 
Top Performer: Magyari scored four goals to pace offensively the Presidents in the win. 
 
The Rest: Adams added three goals while Rearson recorded two scores. Whitby, MacWhinnie (South Portland, Maine/Waynflete School), Samantha Worobetz (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) and Kirsten Yatsko (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) registered a goal each. Weiss stopped 11 shots in goal to record the victory. 
 
 
Date: Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, 4:45 p.m. 
Where: Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. 
Opponent: Salem University
Result: Loss, 18-1
 
How It Happened: Salem University used a dominant performance to top W&J by an 18-1 score to conclude the opening weekend of play for the Presidents. 
 
Top Performer: Rearson scored the lone goal and registered a team-high six shots for W&J in the game. 
 
The Rest: Magyari tallied a team-best five steals defensively.
