Game Recap: Baseball |

W&J defeated by Salve Regina, 3-1

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team had chances to beat Salve Regina on Tuesday in nonconference play during their spring trip to Florida, but the Presidents were unable to capitalize in a 3-1 setback.

W&J is now 3-3 on the young season, while the Seagulls are 3-4 through seven contests.

For the second consecutive game, the Presidents struggled to put runs on the board, as they were limited to just one run for the second straight day. This lack of run production was not fueled by lack of hitting, however, as the Red & Black tallied a season-best 11 hits to Salve's 12.

Leading the offense was Mullen Socha with a team-high three hits and W&J's lone run. Socha was on third after smacking a two-out triple to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Josh Crummer (Great Falls, Va./Flint Hill School) drove him home with a single.

Also sitting with multiple hits were Spencer Howell (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) and Shayne Erny (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) with two each. Erny's two hits today are the first of his senior season, one of which was a triple.

Defensively, senior catcher Justin Griffin (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) shined with a career-best three runners caught stealing. Griffin's arm was critical in W&J holding the Seahawks to just three runs on 12 hits.

On the mound, the Presidents' starter, Nick Drake (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), allowed three runs over 5.0 innings in a losing effort. Despite taking the defeat, Drake did strikeout a career-best three batters.

The Presidents will have the day off tomorrow before returning to the field on Thursday, March 18, to challenge No. 18 UMass Boston at 10:30 a.m.
