Balanced attack leads Presidents to third straight victory


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Twelve different Presidents scored as the W&J College men's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-6 victory over Wilmington College in non-conference play at Alexandre Stadium. 

The win was the third straight for the Presidents, who improve to 4-4 overall. The loss drops the visiting Quakers to 1-4 overall. 

Benjamin Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) paced the Presidents with five points apiece. Ward tallied four goals and an assist, while Strain registered a pair of goals and three helpers on the afternoon. 

Brendan Tribeck (Enola, Pa./Trinity) and Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) added four-point performances as the Presidents scored a season-high 22 goals against the Quakers. W&J held a 7-2 lead after the first and an 11-3 edge at halftime. The Presidents went on to outscore the Quakers by an 11-3 margin over the final 30 minutes of play. 

Pat Brunner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) set the tone early, tallying three first half goals to help aid the offensive attack. Sam Lex (Butler, Pa./Butler) and Reilly Oliverio (Carlisle, Pa./Trinity) also tossed in a pair of goals during the victory. Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) recorded five saves between the pipes as he improved his record to 4-4 this season. 

Nicholas Grosch (Butler, Pa./Butler) won 18-of-30 face-offs and picked up a team-best seven ground balls. Strain and Cohen tallied five ground balls each, while Shawn Wallbillich (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) caused four turnovers. 

W&J held several statistical advantages during the win, including shots (49-23), shots on goal (32-12), successful clears (19-12), ground balls (47-39) and face-off wins (18-13). 

After playing four games in the past 10 days, W&J is now off until Wednesday, March 27, when the Presidents welcome Kalamazoo to Alexandre Stadium for a 5 p.m. start.
