WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team continued their recent surge, downing Waynesburg University by an 8-1 score Saturday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.
The win was the sixth straight for W&J, who improves to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Waynesburg falls to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the league.
The Presidents claimed all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests to claim the Senior Day victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Nate Wang (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and
Sam Bellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) claimed an 8-6 win at first doubles while
Stephen Mehlbaum (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) and
Max Perilstein (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham Township) registered an 8-1 win at second doubles.
Josh Hnat (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) and
Ruchir Gupta (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) finished off the doubles sweep for W&J with an 8-4 win at the third spot.
All five singles victories for W&J came in straight sets. Wang won 6-4, 6-0 at the first spot while Bellini finished off a 6-1, 6-3 victory at second singles. Mehlbaum (7-6, 6-0) and Perilstein (6-1,6-1) won at the third and fourth spots, while Gupta nailed down a 6-3, 6-4) win in sixth singles.
W&J travels to Grove City College on Tuesday, April 16 for a conference showdown with the other lone unbeaten in PAC play. The Presidents and Wolverines are scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
