Game One Recap – Waynesburg 12, W&J 1 (5 innings)

Waynesburg took control early in game one, scoring four runs with two outs to take the 4-0 lead. The hosts added five more in the second inning to extend the edge to 9-0. W&J got one back in the third inning when Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) singled home Rachel Johnson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park). The Yellow Jackets added three more runs in the fourth inning to close out the victory.

Game Two Recap – W&J 13, Waynesburg 5 (6 Innings)

After dropping game one, W&J responded with a strong offensive performance in the nightcap to earn the split. The Presidents scored early and often, as the Red and Black tallied at least one run in all six innings.

With the score tied 3-3 after two innings, the visitors took control with three runs in the top of the third inning. Lapia  and Helffrich produced RBI singles during the frame.

Later in the inning, Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) brought home Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) with a sacrifice fly to center field.

W&J tacked on four more runs to extend its lead to 11-5 in the top of the fifth inning. Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior), Laura Ryder (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) and Lapia tallied run-scoring hits during the frame.

A two-run single by Johnson scored Labbe and Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) to give W&J a 13-5 advantage. Fuertes recorded the Jackets in order to end the game an inning early.

Johnson and Lapia finished with three hits and four RBI each in game two. Helffrich and Fuertes joined the group with multi-hit efforts, as the duo added two hits apiece. Labbe and Ryder scored three runs each.

Fuertes improved to 10-8 in the circle this season. The junior allowed five runs (four earned) while scattering 10 hits.

Johnson continued her torrid stretch at the plate. The senior registered five hits for the second consecutive doubleheader and has 10 hits this week. Johnson currently ranks first in on-base percentage (.537), second in batting average (.447) and third in slugging percentage (.623) among PAC players.

The split moves W&J to 6-8 in PAC play and 16-20 overall. The game two win keeps alive W&J's hopes of qualifying for next week's PAC Tournament.

The Presidents conclude the regular season with a road doubleheader at Chatham University on Saturday, April 27. Game one will start at 4 p.m. The twinbill will be played at West Field in Munhall, Pa.
