BALTIMORE, Md. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team suffered a 5-0 setback to 24th ranked Johns Hopkins University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament.
W&J ends a historic season with a 15-4 overall record. The Presidents claimed their fourth PAC title and first since the 1969 season. W&J was making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament after compiling a perfect 10-0 mark against PAC opponents.
The Presidents produced a pair of competitive matches during the match with the Blue Jays. The tandem of
Nate Wang (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and
Sam Bellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) fell by an 8-4 score at the first doubles spot.
Stephen Mehlbaum (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) and
Max Perilstein (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham Township) dropped the second doubles match by an 8-3 margin.
Johns Hopkins is making its 14th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after they captured their 13th straight Centennial Conference title last weekend. With the victory, the Blue Jays improve to 17-4 overall and advance to the second round on Saturday.
After winning its first PAC Championship since 1969, Wang and eighth-year head coach
Chris Faulk received major All-Presidents Athletic Conference Men's Tennis awards earlier this week. Wang earned PAC Player of the Year honors while Faulk was named Coach of the Year.
Wang was named the PAC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after helping W&J claim a 5-1 victory over Grove City College in the championship match on Saturday, April 27.
